Over 400 students to participate in DSU Science Olympiad March 8, 2012

The Department of Natural Sciences at Dickinson State University will host the 18th Annual Southwest Regional Science Olympiad competition, Thursday, March 8. Events will begin at 9 a.m. and will take place throughout various locations on the DSU campus.

This year, over 400 junior high and high school students will be competing in the Science Olympiad tournament. Students will be participating from schools in the towns of Alexander, Beach, Belfield, Bismarck, Bowbells, Bowman, Dickinson, Glen Ullin, Hebron, Hettinger, Scranton and South Heart.

An awards ceremony will take place at the end of the tournament from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Scott Gym. High scoring teams will advance to the State Science Olympiad Competition in Fargo, N.D. At the ceremony, a $1,000 scholarship will be given to the winning high school team by the DSU Alumni and Foundation. All tournament events are free and open to the public.

Science Olympiad is an international non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievements in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments. Many challenging and motivational events that take place during Science Olympiad are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology.
