DSU HWRC author to present father's story as POW May 1

Posted on 4/20/2012

The Heart River Writers Circle at Dickinson State University will host author Margaret Barnhart Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in Klinefelter Hall, Beck Auditorium. Barnhart will be reading from her novel, "Under the Twisted Cross," a semi-fictional re-imagining of her father's experience as a POW in Germany during WWII.

Teaching at Dickinson State University since 1992, Barnhart is also a writer and actor. "Under the Twisted Cross" is her first novel, though she has written many short stories, poems and essays. Several pieces have been published in local and regional publications in North Dakota, Wyoming and California. Writing "Under the Twisted Cross" was a labor of love for Barnhart. Since its publication, several communities, schools and organizations have asked her to share her father's story and the writing experience through readings and discussions.

"Like many World War II veterans, my father didn't talk much about his wartime activities," said Barnhart. "But when I learned about some of the specific events and experiences he went through, I knew his story needed to be told."
