Bison Stampede Rodeo scheduled this weekend

Posted on 10/11/2018

The 53rd annual Bison Stampede Rodeo is set for Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at the NDSU Equine Center.

The competition features 14 other schools from the six-state region. The events include:

Men: Bareback Bronc Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping

Women: Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing and Team Roping

A total of 17 NDSU students will be competing in the rodeo. The other teams are from Black Hills State University, Dickinson State University, Iowa State University, Mid-Plains Community College, Mitchel Tech Institute, Nebraska College of Tech Ag, Sisseton-Wahpeton College, South Dakota State University, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, plus two other independent schools represented by respective rodeo students (Ridgewater College and Buena Vista University).

"Rodeo is a hard-nosed, tough competition that allows students to gain personal and team confidence," explained Tate Eck, lecturer of equine science and rodeo team coach. "The rodeo athletes not only need to worry about their own thoughts and actions, but they must also counteract the thoughts and actions of their equine partners or other livestock in their respective events - like the bull they are riding."

The event is open to the public. Friday's session is at 7 p.m., while Saturday features two events - at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID and $5 for children ages 6-12. Children under 5 are admitted free.
