UND presentation focuses on famed North Dakota National Guard Unit in World War II

Posted on 3/27/2013

A public presentation on the history of North Dakota's 164th Infantry Regiment is set for 7 p.m., April 2, in the East Asian Room in UND's Chester Fritz Library.

Shirley J. Olgeirson, editor of The 164th Infantry News since 2005, will lead the presentation. The talk is called "The 164th Infantry Regiment: History, Heroism, Heritage" and will look at the 164th Infantry's significance to North Dakota history, emphasizing its performance during World War II and its enduring legacy. Her presentation will also focus on the war activities of Company M, which originated from Grand Forks. Before and after the talk, attendees will have the opportunity to view an exhibit on display in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections that relates to the 164th Infantry.

In 1992, Olgeirson, a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel, coordinated a trip to Guadalcanal - a key location in the history of the 164th - as part of the 50th anniversary of World War II.

The talk is being presented through the coordinated efforts of the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at UND and the War Studies Group, a group of local historians and residents that gather once a month to discuss military history.

The event is free and open to the public.
