The Haymakers: A Chronicle of Five Farm Families by Steven R. Hoffbeck is the title chosen for the next annual book read during the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year at Dakota College at Bottineau.

In the prologue to Haymakers, Hoffbeck writes, "I have tried to tell the stories of families on farms and how haying was part of the seasonal rhythms of their everyday lives, the larger rhythms of life and death. Danger, both natural and mechanical, is woven into the fabric of farm work. This book is a tribute not only to those who lost their lives on farms but, also, to those who have endured despite those losses and continued to work their farmsteads."

Steven R. Hoffbeck teaches in the History Department at the University of Minnesota at Moorhead. The Haymakers was published in 2010 by the Minnesota Historical Society. Hoffbeck also edited Swinging for the Fences: A History of Black Baseball in Minnesota, which the Minnesota Historical Society published in 2005. Hoffbeck also contributes short features to Dakota Datebook, a program National Public Radio hosts.

As has been done for previous book reads, DCB will be offering a series of lectures at noon and 7 pm to explore and discuss topics related to this title. These lectures are free and open to the public. The schedule of topics, speakers, dates, and times will be published later this summer in the Bottineau Courant and the Lake Metigoshe Mirror and will also be available on the DCB website.
