One of the North Dakota University System's biggest advocates for open educational resources has been granted a fellowship.

Tanya Spilovoy, Ed. D., NDUS' director of distance education and state authorization and the leading proponent for OER in the state, was recently named an Open Education Group OER Research Fellow.

Spilovoy joins 20 other fellows for 2016-2018 who will research the impact open educational resources have on the cost of education, impact on student success, trends in OER usage, and the perceptions of OER.

"I'm honored to be named one of 21 OER research fellows," Spilovoy said. "I believe open education resources are essential to the future of open, inexpensive educational efforts. Thanks to the support of the North Dakota Legislature and our public colleges and universities, we're already seeing them gain traction here in North Dakota."

Three colleges and universities have adopted OER for coursework already, which has saved students more than $2 million in textbook costs during the spring and fall semesters of 2016. One of those institutions, the University of North Dakota, will host an OER Summit at its School of Medicine on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
