8 things to discover about NDSU

Posted on 10/11/2018

Student Body President Chase Grindberg and Vice President Marisa Pacella share eight things that have been an important part of their NDSU Experience and want you to discover, too.

1. NDSU sporting events
Marisa: What's a better way to show your Bison pride than by attending our NCAA Division I sporting events? The best part? Students get free tickets! Join us for a basketball game in the brand new Sanford Health Athletic Complex or a football game with our six-time national champions.

2. Career Center
Chase: One of the reasons for furthering your education is to prepare for a rewarding career. Stop by the Career Centerto explore their services such as resume/cover letter critiques, career exploration and interview prep to land your dream job.

I graduate in May 2019 and already have a job lined up. I will be working for Corteva Agriscience as an associate territory manager. I received an internship with the company after attending the NDSU Career Fair, organized by the Career Center. The experience with my internship last summer then provided me the opportunity to apply for a full-time position with the company. I was offered a position shortly after getting back to campus in August.

3. Study abroad
Marisa: Broaden your horizons by studying abroad. NDSU provides a variety of opportunities to supplement your studies by experiencing different cultures from around the world.

4. Wellness Center
Marisa: Choose from a variety of ways to stay fit at the Wellness Center. We have a rock climbing wall, group fitness courses and intramural sports. Aside from physical fitness, there are always ways to strengthen your education through means like CPR and First Aid certifications.

I'm a big fan of watching sports. A few of my friends were on an intramural basketball team, and I'd always attend their games to cheer them on. My sophomore year, I took advantage of the programs they offer and received my CPR certification. Not only did this help build my resume, but it is also an incredibly beneficial life skill to have.

5. Courses
Marisa: Taking a class outside your major is an exciting and rewarding opportunity. Take advantage of the wide variety of courses that NDSU has to offer such as scuba diving, rocking climbing and aviation.

I am a hospitality major, but sophomore year, I selected a class called Business Continuity and Crisis Management from the Emergency Management department. In small groups, we were given the opportunity to engage in field work by analyzing real businesses continuity and emergency management plans.

6. Community
Chase: NDSU has an expansive alumni network that is supportive of the university and its current students. Take the opportunity to meet with these individuals to strengthen your professional network. Even beyond that, the Fargo-Moorhead communityis quickly growing and full of exciting experiences.

7. Student Organizations
Chase: We have nearly 300 student organizations here on campus. Get involved in one or two to find like-minded individuals and build leadership skills. One of the best decisions I made my first year was to get involved in a handful of organizations on campus. I had the opportunity to meet a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life while developing skills such as leadership, teamwork and relationship building. The organizations on campus are not only a great way to get involved on campus but to expand your interests.

8. Student focused
Chase: Everything on campus is geared towards the students, so you can discover you! Our university prides itself on being student focused and brings it into everyday student life. From our small class sizes to our bike share program, everything you encounter on campus is for you.

Chase and Marisa are both seniors. Chase is majoring in crop and weed sciences. Marisa is majoring in hospitality and tourism management.

As a student-focused, land grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
