Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention

The North Dakota Higher Education Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention provides University System campuses with resources, knowledge and networks to address student misuse of alcohol and other substances.

The consortium advocates for stronger prevention policies, collaborates in campus-community partnerships and helps campuses develop evidenced-based prevention programs. The consortium is made up of representatives from each campus.

North Dakota Partners in Prevention

In 2009, the consortium received a two-year, $371,791 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. The grant is being used to support the consortium's North Dakota Partners in Prevention project, which is comprised of three main components: late-night, alcohol-free, student-designed programming; eCHECKUP TO GO, personalized, evidence-based online prevention intervention; and Brief Alcohol and Screening Intervention for College Students or BASICS.

Information for Parents and Family Members

As students transition from high school to college, they are faced with many difficult decisions; some may be about the use of alcohol and other drugs.

Parents and trusted family members play an important role in these decisions. In fact, the 2010 NDCORE Alcohol and Other Drug Survey showed that parents' expectations or rules about alcohol limited the alcohol consumption of 81.7 percent of North Dakota college students.

In 2011, the North Dakota University System partnered with the North Dakota Department of Transportation to provide parents useful information about how to communicate with their children about alcohol. The Parents LEAD (Listen, Educate, Ask, Discuss) project can be viewed at: www.parentslead.org.

For more information, download this brochure or view the video Parents Matter: Talking to Your College Student about Alcohol.

Surveys & Evaluations

The consortium regularly surveys students using the ND CORE Alcohol and Drug Survey. Information generated by consortium research is used to design programs, services and policies aimed at reducing high-risk alcohol and other drug use.
