22 Mar Mayville State Staff Senate organizes food drive for students
March 11 to 15 was spring break at Mayville State University. Many students headed for home, or maybe to warm and sunny places for rest and relaxation. Others, however, stayed on campus and in town so they could work at their jobs and find other things to do closer to their Mayville State home.
The campus cafeteria is closed during Spring Break, which leaves those students who stayed on campus or in town on their own for meals. At first glance, this may not seem like such a big thing, but the spring semester is ticking away and financial aid funds may be dwindling for many students as the semester comes to a close.
To help make sure the food needs of these students were covered, Mayville State University Staff Senate announced a food drive in February. Donations were collected until Friday, March 8. Faculty and staff stepped up in a big way! Enough food, including cereal, pasta, soups, peanut butter, jelly, Ramen noodles, granola bars, soups, and much more, was collected to put together 24 grocery bags.
“The generosity and outpouring of support from MSU staff and faculty is truly amazing!” said Susan Cordahl, MSU Staff Senate President. “This effort is a reflection of the university’s commitment to personal service.”
Care packages were left for students to pick up at the campus mail room and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. They disappeared as quickly as they appeared, and students were grateful for this gesture of personal service that meant they wouldn’t be hungry during spring break 2019.
