Memorial celebration for retired NDSU faculty member set

 

James Council, professor emeritus of psychology, died July 19. The campus community is invited to a celebration of his life and contributions on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the McGovern Alumni Center atrium.

Council earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland, College Park and his doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.

He joined the psychology faculty at NDSU in 1985, where he spent 31 years as a teacher and researcher, with academic interests including hypnosis and the history of psychology.

He served several terms as chair for the Department of Psychology, as associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and interim dean of libraries.

Although retired, Council remained active in the department, continued his research and kept teaching his History and Systems capstone course for psychology majors.

Council is survived by his wife Susie, daughter Elizabeth and son Gregory.

Council’s friends are invited to come share personal stories of his good nature, leadership, passion for knowledge and pursuit of the varied experiences of life.
