29 Sep UND symposium will focus on implementing high-impact practices to promote deep student learning
The University of North Dakota will hold a Fall Innovative Learning Symposium featuring Katie Linder, Director of the Ecampus Research Unit, Oregon State University. , is set for Tuesday, Oct. 15. Linder will present “Implementing High-Impact Practices Across Modalities” twice, once from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and again from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
High-impact practices are teaching techniques that promote deep learning by encouraging student engagement and success.
Interested education professionals across the state are invited to take part in person or online. There is no charge. Register here. Zoom is available for those who are off-campus; select “Distance” as the method in which you will be participating.
The symposium is sponsored by UND Academic Affairs and the Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA).
The concept of High-Impact Educational Practices (HIPs) has been around for years, but the conversation about transitioning HIPs to online and blended/hybrid environments is just getting started.
In this interactive workshop, Katie Linder, a co-editor of High-Impact Practices in Online Education, will lead participants through the creation of an HIP implementation action plan that is applicable in face-to-face, blended/hybrid, and online classrooms.
Participants will also learn more about the state of the research for HIPs, have the opportunity to discuss tips and strategies for incorporating various HIPs across modalities, and leave with an actionable plan for implementing one or more HIPs into a modality of their choice.
This plan will include:
• a clear sense of how the chosen HIP(s) connects with disciplinary learning goals
• specific learning objectives for the HIP(s)
• an assignment idea related to the HIP(s) implementation
• an assessment plan to measure the success of the HIP(s) implementation and impact on student learning
Each participant will walk away with some new ideas for how to incorporate HIPs into their classroom as well as an increased awareness of how the constellation of HIPs can positively impact student learning across the modalities.
About Katie Linder:
Linder is the director of the Ecampus Research Unit at Oregon State University where she hosts the Research in Action podcast and helps to make research actionable in the field of online teaching and learning. She is also an Associate Certified Coach through
the International Coach Federation.
Linder is an avid writer and researcher with a passion for process and peeking behind the scenes at what it takes to be a successful academic. For the past several years, her work has focused on blended course design best practices, institutional supports for accessible online learning, and research literacy for scholarship of teaching and learning practitioners and distance education stakeholders.
Her latest works include Managing Your Professional Identity Online: A Guide for Faculty, Staff, and Administrators (Stylus, 2018), High-Impact Practices in Online Education (Stylus, 2018), and The Business of Innovating Online (Stylus, 2019).
She is also the author of The Blended Course Design Workbook: A Practical Guide (Stylus, 2016). She is under contract for her fourth book, Going Alt-Ac: A Guide
to Alternative Academic Careers, co-authored with Kevin Kelly and Tom Tobin, to be released in January 2020. She is also the editor of a forthcoming book series, Thrive Online, due for release from Stylus Publishing in 2019.
Linder earned her BA in English Literature from Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash., and her MA and PhD in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from The Ohio State University.
