UND to participate in National Drone Safety Awareness Day this weekend

UND partnering with Northern Plains UAS Test Site to promote drone safety

What: National Drone Safety Awareness Day

When: Saturday, Nov. 9, 1-4 p.m.

Where: UND Tech Accelerator, 4201 James Ray Drive

Background:

As part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) National Drone Safety Awareness Week Nov. 4-10, the Northern Plains UAS Test Site will host a special event for the Greater Grand Forks Area beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the UND Tech Accelerator.

This event is hosted by and in partnership with the Northern Plains UAS Test Site, UND Research Institute for Autonomous Systems (RIAS), UND Aerospace and the UND Aerospace Foundation. The kid-friendly event is open to the community.

Opening remarks at 1:15 p.m. will include Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown, Nicholas Flom, UAS test site executive director, and Jakee Stoltz, UAS test site director of operations.

The event will feature an open house of the Northern Plains UAS Test Site’s headquarters, as well as drone experts providing one-on-one guidance and advice to local operators and enthusiasts.

Participants are encouraged to bring their drones for guided flight instruction and help with FAA registration and Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC). There will be live demonstrations of flights and parachutes, a drone simulator and a scavenger hunt to win a Blade Inductrix Switch RTF drone.
